Where to Go for Outdoor Family Fun this Winter in Niagara Falls

Winter in Niagara Falls.
The Canadian Horseshoe Falls in wintertime.

If you’re planning a special Niagara Falls winter getaway, here are some fun and family-friendly outdoor activities to check out for one-of-a-kind experiences that will have you loving the snowy weather.

Ice Skating

Ice skating is one of the most beloved outdoor activities for Canadians to partake in during winter, and this year you can gather the family and go for an outdoor skate at Fort George National Historic Site and Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery. The Vintage Parks Canada Ice Rink located at the Fort George National Historic Site is back for a second year and is free for everyone to enjoy. The rink is open every day of the week and on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays Vintage Hotels will offer skate rentals, concessions, and helmets.

The brand new Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake also has an outdoor skating rink for people of all ages to enjoy this winter. The rink is located alongside the heated Whisky Bar Patio where you can indulge in wine, cocktails, and a winter menu which also includes non-alcoholic beverages. Skating is $5 per person and skate rentals are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Walking

For a spectacular winter nighttime experience in Niagara Falls, take a stroll along the Niagara Parkway in front of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and take in the beauty and wonder of the Winter Festival of Light’s sparkling illumination displays. You can also catch the nightly illumination of the American and Horseshoe Falls and spectacular fireworks shows on Friday nights at 9pm and every night at 9pm from December 22nd to 29th, with two special shows also happening on New Year’s Eve.

Exploring

Take your family on an adventure into the heart of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls at Journey Behind the Falls. This incredible attraction takes you down 125-feet of bedrock into the 130-year-old tunnel system located behind the mighty Horseshoe Falls, allowing you to explore the tunnels, see the water rushing down in front of you, and hear the power and sounds of this breathtaking waterfall. The viewing portals cut right through the rock, so you and your family will have a one-of-a-kind view of the Horseshoe Falls in wintertime.
